Taking care (Maintenance) of your bogu

Whether used, borrowed, or new it is very important to keep proper care of your bogu. Indonesia presents some challenges in bogu maintenance due to the climate. Detailed information on how to maintain this investment is in the manual available for download at our Yahoo Groups site (or you can download it here, or from the original site here). What is provided here are just a few tips for those of you that are new to, and not so new to, bogu.

1) Your bogu comes with several strings (himo) that need to be attached to the men and do. If you have a new bogu make sure to attach the correct himo to the right spot. If your bogu is used or borrowed, check the condition of all the himo before use

2) Always check the condition of the do and mengane before practice. Any issues need to be addressed as they can cause harm to yourself. A damaged mengane will not protect your face well and a cracked do could lead to injury to your stomach area or to others.

3) Wipe down all part of the bogu after practice. You will sweat a lot into the parts in contact with your skin. Wiping down your bogu helps to absorb some of that sweat and remove any salt (yes, your body produces salt) left behind.

4) Pack your bogu properly into your bad. Some parts are a little more delicate than others and if packed incorrectly can lead to shorter lifetime of that piece of equipment

5) Once you get home, unpack your bogu and let it dry in a well ventilated place. The weather here has a nasty habit of allowing fungus to grow on almost everything. Airing out your bogu also helps to reduce the bacteria and smell that accumulates over time.

Most bogu parts can be repaired or replaced, but it can be quite expensive. The better you maintain your bogu the longer it will last without repairs. Remember, your bogu can last you for many years – the better you take care it, the longer you’ll be able to enjoy wearing it.

Taking care of your shinai (bamboo sword)

As part of “living” kendo, the shinai as your weapon is the most important part of you equipment. It is therefore very important that you maintain your shinai properly. You can find a kendo manual at google.com for download so the items listed below will be general. Or check this site, or you can take a look at the picture above.

1) When you receive a new shinai you will need to take it apart and prepare you shinai for use. This requires disassembling your shinai as shown in the manual, oiling your shinai, and reassembling it for use.

2) To keep your shinai in good usable condition you should always check for splinters or other damage to the bamboo. If you find any, you should immediately cut off any splinters and then sand down the affected area. Small splinters can get into the eye and cause a lot of trouble. Afterwards, you may wish to wax the shinai.

3) Check the shinai strings (tsuru) frequently to make sure that it is taught not tight. If you tie the tsuru too tight, the tip of the shinai will bend upwards. The tsuru only needs to be tight enough to keep the leather tip (sakigawa) and grip (tsukagawa) from moving.

4) Check the condition of the sakigawa (leather tip). There should be no holes in it.

5) If the tsuru becomes frayed (looks like it will break) it is time to change it.

Keep in mind that the weather conditions in the country where the shinai was made can vary greatly with the more humid conditions in Indonesia. Weather does affect your shinai so proper preparation and maintenance will go a long way to ensuring that your shinai is safe to use and that it will last longer than if completely untreated.

Everyone please check your shinai after every keiko and shiai. Too many of you are being careless and not paying attention to cracks. Remember, improper care leads to injuries.

Men division :
1. ERMAN ARDIANTO (SKA)
2. SUNARYO (MKA)
3. AFIDATA HILMAN (MKA)

WOMEN DIVISION :

  1. DERRALITA (SKA)
  2. MARIANA (MKA)
  3. INDAH (MKA)
